Orange
Kilomètre-0 is, above all, about local produce or short supply chains. A short supply chain means at most one middleman between grower and consumer — so with oranges, we’re rarely in that bracket. Even so, I want to champion it for the sheer pleasure it brings, which matters too… and since we’ll never grow it in the north of France anyway, we buy it in winter and make the most of it as a little vitamin boost ^^.
What’s more, apparently it’s good for us. It’s famous for its vitamin C, even though kiwi, peppers or parsley have far more. Still, you’ll admit it’s easier to eat 300 g of oranges than 60 g of parsley in a day ^^. It’s credited with plenty of other virtues, too. In short, there’s a lot to love.
Obviously, buy it organic so you can use the zest. Buy it from a greengrocer or a seller who can tell you which to choose for your taste and your use: sweet, slightly tart, bitter… Myself, I buy it at Côteaux Nantais at Talensac market (in Nantes) for €2 a kilo at the moment.
